Captured by Cliff

Even though I have an iPhone 11 Pro, I don’t know how to use all of the features to create in portrait mode. As an artist, I still appreciate collaborating with the classic photographers who will contort their bodies for the angles and lighting for the right photo. While today’s photographer may be a hashtag away, I prefer the one who uses their camera like makeup: to enhance natural beauty.

“Black In Bloom” curated by SarahJInTheCity featuring crowns by Eden America and shot by Cliff Canon

One of my favorites is Cliff Canon, a New York native. Our paths crossed when I witnessed his collaboration with stylist SarahJInTheCity on the project Black In Bloom in 2017. While SarahJInTheCity worked with nature to style the models in crowns by Eden America, it was Cliff’s angles that pierced my spirit. Instantly, I wanted to work with him.

VKP Author Chantel Massey by Cliff Canon

As I was lining my ducks in a row, he grew his portfolio to include branding, editorial, and location shoots. In fact, he shot the photos that inspired the cover of VKP Author Chantel Massey’s book cover for Bursting at the Seams: A Collection of Poetry.

Then it happened. In 2018, I was ready to shoot my project, Pen-Up Glam. It was to showcase the writing process and was primarily inspired by my favorite era in history, the Harlem Renaissance. In less than two hours, our team achieved three looks in a beautiful luxury hotel in downtown Indianapolis. Like all good things, working with Cliff was worth the wait!
