Write In the Gaps

One of the most vivid memories that fuel the work of VK Press was the V in our name, my GMa. All of my life, she has talked about writing a book that told the truth about the Black and Bi-Racial experience in my hometown. When she passed in 2017, I had a deep sense of regret that she did not get to fulfill this dream.

Maybe you have a book idea. You feel that your story, poems, or essays will improve the lives of others or shift the narrative on issues that matter to you.

What’s stopping you?

If there is a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, you must be the one to write it.
— Toni Morrison

Do not wait for your favorite author to publish your idea. Do not think you do not have the gift of writing; that’s what editors are for. There may be books like the one you desire, but they are not yours; so write it!

What has helped me tremendously in my writing process is benchmarking. I seek out three or so books like the one I want to write and set page count and formatting goals. From there, I write the book tailored to my needs.

Through your writing and creative endeavors, seek to fill in the gaps of your own knowledge as well as those in literature. Know that your delivery will be unique to your personality and may fill in the gaps for others.
