Her Wildest Dream
For Women’s History Month, I wanted to research women writers, artists, or books to share with you. Instead when I think of women of significance who have inspired me and my work, I think of three women.
The first is my maternal GMa, Yvonne Marie. She is the single most powerful influence in my life. She nourished my mind and made me believe that I could do anything I set out to do. GMa fueled my spirit and equipped me with lessons I could use to navigate life.
If you have ever been in conversation with her, you know she has wanted to publish volumes of books about her life, gentrification in Indianapolis, and life as a mother of nine on government’s assistance. This was something she spoke of even until she passed in 2017. Unfortunately, there were no notes or records that could make this dream come true.
As the V of VK Press, she is the reason why we publish books. Maya Angelou once said, “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” Because my GMa was unable to publish her story, I want VK Press to help others tell there’s and release the story within.
As I reflect on this first woman whose history has shaped my present, I’m reminded that our dreams are not our own. They may be envisioned by one generation and carried out by another.
Whose dream do you feel you are realizing through your own life?
Creatively yours,
Shavonne
