the body: a home for love
Her work preceded her. In 2017, I came across a book illustrated by Deun Ivory when I met the author during a conference. The work, formatted like a children’s book, tackled grown woman issues. It was like self-help for the inner child.
Ivory’s illustrations conveyed the range of emotions of the coming of age story. From the young mind that’s easily shaped by the opinions of others to the moment of resolve while choosing to trust your voice, Deun’s sketches captured the vulnerability of it all.
By the time I put a face to the art, Deun was co-hosting and Art Director for the Black Girl in Om (BGIO) podcast. Over time, she opened up about her own healing process. Like a flower in the morning, her petals opened up to her fullest expression.
Part of that expression was to transition from her role at BGIO and pursue her heart’s calling. Deun is a survivor of sexual assault and she became intentional about shifting the culture for other survivors through her nonprofit, the body: a home for love.
One look at her work or social media and you’re mesmerized. With each image, it is as if a Black woman reclaims her own power from the traumatic experience of just existing in a racist and sexist society.
I would have included more images of her artwork, but the artist is absolutely stunning! Deun Ivory is both the muse and the maker.
